Coverage: All motorways (autosnelwegen / autoroutes) and most major roads for HGVs; cars drive motorways free
Technology: GNSS on-board unit (OBU); DSRC microwave gantries; no OBU required for cars

Do Cars Pay Toll in Belgium? 2026 Update

No, with one exception. Belgian motorways are completely free for passenger cars, motorcycles, and vehicles under 3.5 t GVW. The Viapass distance-based toll system applies only to vehicles over 3.5 tonnes. The sole toll facility where cars pay is the Liefkenshoek Tunnel under the Scheldt near Antwerp.

Key Reality: Belgium has one of the densest motorway networks in Europe for its size, and for private cars it remains fully free. HGV operators, however, face a comprehensive distance-based toll covering motorways and many major roads across all three regions (Flanders, Wallonia, Brussels-Capital).

2026 Update: Viapass HGV rates were indexed to inflation in January 2026. The Belgian federal and regional governments continue to discuss a potential road pricing scheme for private cars (kilometre charge), but no car toll has been enacted. Belgium remains car-toll-free in 2026.

Belgium Toll Costs: Current Rates

Viapass HGV Rates (per km, 2026)

The Viapass rate depends on Euro emission class, number of axles, and road type (motorway vs. non-motorway). Rates shown are for a 5-axle vehicle on motorway:

Euro Class Motorway (€/km) Non-motorway A/B road (€/km)
Euro VI / Zero emission 0.143 0.085
Euro V 0.158 0.094
Euro IV 0.172 0.102
Euro III and below 0.195 0.116

Rates shown for 5-axle HGVs over 12 t. Lighter vehicles (3.5–12 t) pay lower per-km rates. Verify current tariffs at viapass.be.

How to Pay Belgium Tolls

HGV Viapass OBU:

  • GNSS OBU required before entering the Belgian tolled road network; no retroactive booking permitted
  • OBU available from certified service providers: Satellic (official Belgian provider), DKV, UTA, Eurotoll, and other EETS partners
  • Satellic offers OBU rental for occasional operators; account-based billing (prepay or post-pay)
  • EETS OBUs from other European providers registered for Belgium are accepted

Liefkenshoek Tunnel (cars and HGVs):

  • Cash (EUR) and all major credit/debit cards at staffed booths and automated lanes
  • Viapass OBU handles tunnel payment automatically for HGVs; point toll is added to distance charge

Enforcement and Penalties

  • Roadside control units and enforcement cameras check OBU registration and account status automatically
  • Driving without a valid OBU or with an inactive account: fine up to €1,000 plus unpaid toll retroactively applied
  • Vehicle may be immobilised until fine and toll debt are settled
  • Foreign-registered HGVs are subject to identical enforcement; EU cross-border fine recovery applies
  • Incorrect vehicle classification (axle count, emission class) triggers underpayment charges plus administrative penalty

Recent Changes (2026)

  • January 2026 indexation: Viapass per-km rates were increased by approximately 2.8% in line with the Belgian health index, affecting all HGV categories
  • Car road pricing debate: The Belgian federal government's De Wever coalition included kilometre-based car road pricing in its formation agreement; legislation is under preparation but not yet in force. Belgium remains car-toll-free for motorway use in 2026
  • Antwerp Oosterweel Link: The major Antwerp ring road project (Oosterweel) continued construction through 2025; new tunnel sections are expected to be added to the Viapass network as they open
  • Zero-emission incentive: Battery-electric and hydrogen HGVs registered in Belgium benefit from reduced Viapass rates in line with EU Eurovignette directive

Planning Your Journey

  • Car drivers: no preparation needed; Belgian motorways are free; only the Liefkenshoek Tunnel costs €6 if you choose to use it (the alternative Kennedy Tunnel is free but more congested)
  • HGV operators: obtain a Viapass-compatible OBU before entering Belgium; Satellic has service points at major Belgian border crossings
  • Brussels Ring (R0) and Antwerp Ring (R1) are included in the Viapass network — HGV operators transiting the country cannot avoid toll roads on most practical routes
  • The E40 (Calais–Brussels–Liège–Aachen), E17 (Calais–Ghent–Antwerp), and E19 (Paris–Brussels–Antwerp) are the main international transit corridors, all covered by Viapass

Frequently Asked Questions

Do cars need an OBU in Belgium?

No. The OBU requirement applies only to vehicles over 3.5 t GVW. Passenger cars, motorcycles, and light vans drive all Belgian motorways and roads completely free without any device or registration.

What is Satellic?

Satellic is the official Belgian OBU provider contracted by Viapass. It provides GNSS/DSRC on-board units for HGVs, available for purchase or rental. Foreign operators with EETS-registered OBUs from other providers (DKV, UTA, etc.) can use those instead if they cover the Belgian network.

Does the Viapass toll apply to vans and light trucks?

Yes — from 1 April 2016, the Viapass toll has applied to all vehicles over 3.5 t GVW, including light commercial vehicles and larger vans. Vehicles at or under 3.5 t remain toll-free.
