What is Palmetto Pass or PAL PASS

A Palmetto Pass, like E-ZPass, is an electronic tag you install in your vehicle to pay tolls for travel on South Carolina toll roads. It is popularly known as PAL PASS in South Carolina. You can open an account with the South Carolina Department of transportation[1] for the transponder and pay tolls electronically.

How does Palmetto Pass work

By purchasing a Palmetto Pass your vehicle is equipped with a small electronic transponder. As your vehicle enters the toll lane, the transponder on your vehicles windshield reads information and charges your associated Palmetto Account with the appropriate toll.

How to open a Palmetto Pass account

A Palmetto Pass account can be opened:

  • Online on the Cross Island Parkway website[2]
  • Download an application and fax or mail it to the
    Cross Island Parkway
    P. O. Box 5096
    Hilton Head Island, SC 29938

Where can I use Palmetto Pass

Palmetto Pass transponders can be used on both the toll roads of South Carolina: Cross Island Parkway and Greenville Southern Connector.

How can I identify a Palmetto Pass lane

Lanes on Cross Island Parkway and the Greenville Southern Connector are appropriately marked by canopy signs that reflect whether Palmetto Pass can be used at that lane.

Can I have more than one vehicle registered in my Palmetto Pass account

Yes, provided each vehicle is listed on your application. The transponder can be interchanged amongst your vehicles, provided they are the of same vehicle class. You need to provide the Cross Island Parkway Customer Service Center with details of all vehicles which will use your Palmetto Pass account.

What if I do not have a Palmetto Pass on South Carolina toll roads

If your vehicle is not fitted with a toll tag and you are traveling on Cross Island Parkway or the Greenville Southern Connector toll road, the system classifies you as a toll violator. Cameras fitted at the toll point would snap a picture of your license plate and a toll invoice would be sent to the registered owner of the vehicle.
